Petrol diesel price today in India as crude oil crosses $100 per barrel

Petrol Diesel Price Today in India: Fuel Rates Stable Despite Crude Oil Above $100

Petrol Diesel Price Today in India

Petrol and diesel prices in India remained unchanged on March 11, 2026, despite rising volatility in the global oil market. International crude oil prices have crossed the $100 per barrel mark due to growing geopolitical tensions in West Asia.

However, the surge in global crude prices has not yet resulted in any immediate change in domestic retail fuel prices across major Indian cities.

The international benchmark Brent Crude Oil recently climbed above $100 per barrel and briefly surged past $114. This spike is largely linked to concerns about potential supply disruptions amid the ongoing geopolitical tensions involving the United States and Iran.

Latest Petrol and Diesel Prices in Major Cities

Fuel prices vary across Indian cities mainly because of differences in state taxes and transportation costs.

Delhi

  • Petrol: ₹94.77 per litre
  • Diesel: ₹87.67 per litre

Mumbai

  • Petrol: ₹103.49 per litre
  • Diesel: ₹90.03 per litre

Other Metro Cities

In most major metropolitan cities such as Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Kolkata, petrol prices continue to remain above ₹100 per litre, while diesel prices are still below the ₹100 mark.

How Fuel Prices Are Determined in India

Petrol and diesel prices in India are revised daily based on global crude oil prices and fluctuations in foreign exchange rates.

Fuel pricing and distribution in the country are mainly handled by three major oil marketing companies:

  • Indian Oil Corporation
  • Bharat Petroleum
  • Hindustan Petroleum

These companies review global market trends and currency movements before adjusting retail fuel prices.

Why Fuel Prices Have Remained Stable Since 2022

Retail fuel prices in India have remained relatively stable since May 2022. At that time, the central government along with several state governments reduced excise duties and value-added taxes on petrol and diesel.

Since then, despite fluctuations in international crude oil prices, domestic fuel rates have seen only limited changes.

Impact of Global Geopolitical Tensions

Recent increases in crude oil prices have been linked to rising geopolitical tensions in West Asia. One of the major concerns for global energy markets is the possibility of disruptions in oil supply routes.

A key transit route for global oil shipments is the Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant portion of the world’s oil supply passes. Any disruption in this region could significantly impact global oil prices.

Key Factors That Affect Petrol and Diesel Prices in India

Several factors influence fuel prices in India.

1. Global Crude Oil Prices

Crude oil is the primary raw material used to produce petrol and diesel. When global crude prices rise, fuel prices may also increase.

2. Rupee–Dollar Exchange Rate

India imports a large share of its crude oil requirements. If the Indian rupee weakens against the US dollar, the cost of importing crude oil increases.

3. Taxes by Central and State Governments

Taxes such as excise duty and value-added tax (VAT) form a major portion of fuel prices. This is why petrol and diesel prices differ from state to state.

4. Transportation and Supply Costs

Logistics costs, refinery margins, and demand–supply dynamics also influence the final retail price of fuel.

Will Petrol and Diesel Prices Increase in India?

Market experts suggest that if global crude oil prices continue to remain above $100 per barrel for an extended period, it could eventually put upward pressure on fuel prices in India.

However, government tax policies and pricing decisions by oil marketing companies will also play an important role in determining whether retail fuel prices change in the near future.
